CHAPTER 5

DIRECTORY

The EIES® directory contains information about members and conferences. From homebase select Directory. The menu choices here include All Conferences (for information about the conferences available on EIES®) and All Users (for information about EIES® members). In the Directory you are also able to change your password and user data.

5.1 Learing About Other EIES® Members

Each member of EIES® has a directory listing which includes the member’s name, nickname, and user id, a link to the list of their personal conferences, the date that the member joined EIES® (Established date), and the date that the member was last active. Members may also include other information, such as their telephone number, zip code, and mailing address. Finally, users can include a description which could contain their personal or professional interests, e-mail addresses on other systems, etc. We encourage you to fill in your own directory information. It helps people reach you by mail or telephone and also serves as a convenient way for EIES® members to meet each other for the first time.

To see the directory listing of any member first click on All Users from the menu bar. The Users All List screen displays all members of the system in the order of their user numbers. You can click on the name of any member you would like to learn about to view their directory listing. Since the list of members is long, you may be able to use your browser to find a particular name. For Netscape users, click on Edit from the Netscape Navigator menu bar, then select Find. Type the name of the EIES® member you wish to find in the field labeled ‘Find What?’.

5.2 Modifying Your Directory Listing

To modify or add information to your directory listing select Directory from the homebase menu (if you are viewing a member’s listing or the list of all members, press the BACK button one or two times to return to the main directory screen). Then click on the Change: User Data button (located next to the Change Password button). Fill in your information in the fields provided and press the Submit button when finished. EIES® automatically fills in the other parts of the directory such as the date your account was established and the date you last signed on. All EIES® users will be able to see the information you have included.

5.2.1 Selecting a Nickname

Each EIES® nickname is unique. People with the most common names should choose a nickname that incorporates information such as another initial or a company acronym. For instance, John’s nickname can be John S or JohnNJIT. Mary can be MaryAnne or Mary T.

5.3 Selecting an EIES® Password

To protect your access to the system you should change your password frequently and keep it private. Be sure not to forget your password; you need it to get onto EIES®. If you do forget your password, contact your group coordinator or account manager.

To change your password go to the Directory View screen for your account (you get there by choosing Directory from the homebase menu bar). Then click on Change: Password. A table with the following three fields will be displayed:

Field Name You Type
Enter your current password> The password that you have now.
Enter your new password> The new password you wish to have.
Verify your new password> Again, enter the new password you wish to have.

As you type your password the characters are not displayed. This is to protect the privacy of your password. Depending on your browser, asterisks or other characters will appear in place of the actual characters in your password.
